Freddy Galvis no longer a Blue Jay, claimed off waivers by Reds

TORONTO, Ont. —

One of the most popular players in the Blue Jays clubhouse is on his way out.

Freddy Galvis, the veteran infielder who had such a positive influence on the rookie-laden Toronto lineup, was claimed off waivers on Monday by the Cincinnati Reds.

A team source said the Jays had hoped to move Galvis at the July 31 MLB trade deadline but couldn’t find a taker. Ideally, management would have liked to send Galvis to a contender as a reward for his leadership role with the young team.

Galvis was a strong mentor to a number of young Jays players, including Vlad Guerrero Jr., Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Cavan Biggio.

But when Bo Bichette was promoted in early August, the playing time for Galvis was reduced as Bichette became the every-day shortstop.

“Freddie was a great influence in the time he was here,” the source said. “A lot of our young players benefited from his experience.”
