CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Holland College Hurricanes had a perfect weekend to begin the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) regular season
The ‘Canes swept two games from the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday in Halifax before securing two more victories on Sunday in Fredericton, N.B., over the UNB Reds.
“We are happy to have our incoming players contributing immediately,” said head coach Andrew MacNevin. “Having our young guys step up to the challenge and perform this weekend in their first collegiate experience was important for us. We will regroup this week and focus on areas we need to improve on moving forward, but it’s good to have the first weekend out of the way and get off to a strong start to the season.”
Saturday
The ’Canes got off to a good start, scoring five runs in the second inning en route to a 13-7 victory in the opener with the Tigers.
Tyler Johnston gave up five runs on eight hits in four innings for the victory. He struck out four. Parker Gallant threw three innings of relief, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out five.
Luke Robinson had four hits to lead Holland College’s 17-hit attack. Curtis McGregor, Brett Brittany, Chase Brown, Elijah Hood and Tyson McInnis all had multiple hits.
The Hurricanes’ eight-run fifth inning turned a 9-2 deficit into a 10-9 victory.
Chase Brown drove in the winning run for the ‘Canes with a single. Ryan Abraham earned the victory, surrendering nine runs on seven hits in four innings while striking out three. Robison threw one inning in relief.
Hood went 3-for-4 to pace the attack while Robison, Brittany, Brown and Colin Gaudette each collected multiple hits.
Sunday
The UNB Reds watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 15-3 loss to the Hurricanes on Sunday.
Brittany, Brown, McInnis, Patrick Young and Abraham all had multiple hits for the Hurricanes.
Eric Anderson threw a two-hitter for the win. McInnis threw one inning in relief.
The ’Canes scored four runs in the top of the seventh of Game 2 for a 13-9 victory to complete the sweep.
Hurricanes’ starter Dylan Cameron allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings, striking out two.
McGregor, Gaudette, Robison and Julian MacDonald all had multiple hits.
Holland College visits Halifax Saturday to play the Saint Mary’s Huskies for games at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
The ‘Canes host their home opener on Sunday when they take on the St. FX X-Men at Memorial Field for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
