Athletics score three in final at bat to defeat Bombers

STRATFORD, P.E.I. – The Alley Stratford Athletics scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep their season alive on Sunday.

Jonathan Arsenault’s sacrifice fly cashed Marshall Ellis from third to give the Athletics a 7-6 victory over the Peakes Tee Bombers.

Peakes leads the best-of-seven Kings County Baseball League final 3-1. Game 5 has not been set.

The bottom of the seventh started with an Adam Smith single and after a fly ball was dropped in left field, Ellis hit an RBI single. Randy Taylor followed with an RBI single to tie it.

Stratford led 2-0 through two innings before Peakes cut the deficit in half in the third.

The Bombers took a 4-2 lead in the fifth after Stratford bobbled back-to-back bunts and Tyson McInnis laced a two-run single. A passed ball cashed another.

The Athletics got one back in their half of the inning as Shawn MacDougall’s single cashed Dominique Ryan. With the A’s threatening Ellis lined out to McInnis, who tossed the ball to second for the double play.

Rob Phelan, who was the starting pitcher for Peakes, hit a two-run single in the top of the sixth to give the visitors a 6-3 lead. The A’s got one back in the bottom of the inning on a ground out.

Dan O’Shea went the distance in picking up the win while Josh Coffin suffered the loss in relief of Phelan.

Smith had two hits to lead the Athletics at the plate while Arsenault, Allister Smith and Steve Collins were all 1-for-3.

Phelan went 3-for-3 to pace the Bombers while Matt Bradley had two hits.
