CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Cam Askew is going back to the South Carolina Stingrays.
The ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals announced the former Charlottetown Islanders forward as its first player signed for the 2019-20 season on Monday.
The 22-year-old Boston native scored six of his 17 goals on the power play last season. He added 10 assists for 27 points in 47 games.
“After last year there was no real thought about playing anywhere else,” Askew said. “I love South Carolina, I’m pretty close with coach (Steve) Bergin and I’m happy to play for him next year. It was a pretty easy decision for me to come back and I’m already looking forward to getting down there.”
The six-foot-four, 212-pound Askew played the second half of the 2017-18 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season with the Islanders. He had 14 points in 31 games after being acquired from the Shawinigan Cataractes. He also played for Drumondville and Moncton during his five-season major junior career.
“It took him a little bit to get going but once he got comfortable, he really excelled,” Bergin said. “Coming into his second year we’re expecting big things. He has a full summer of knowing exactly what he needs to get ready and we talked about what he needs to improve on but he’s got a ton of potential and we think he can have a really good pro career and make a big impact for us.”
