A Telegram editorial Oct. 23 questioned why the Trudeau government would oppose the establishment of a Conservative-dominated parliamentary committee to investigate the WE affair if the Liberals had nothing to hide.
The editorial states that the Liberals either do not want possible significant and damaging details to see the light of day or that scoring House of Commons points is more important than addressing significant COVID-19-related health and economic issues.
I beg to differ. The WE affair (Conservatives would prefer scandal) has been widely discussed both in Parliament and the media. It is under investigation by the Ethics Commissioner who has yet to deliver a final report. It would be presumptive and premature, therefore, to establish a parliamentary committee designed primarily to routinely embarrass the government at a time when its attention should be firmly focussed on the very issues mentioned.
Why create a stick to beat themselves in some kind of political deflective game set up by an over-reaching opposition party whose main priority appears to be obtaining power?
Death by a thousand paper cuts seems to have been the Conservative strategy. The Liberals did the right thing in calling their bluff.
