GUEST OPINION

I am sure you remember the name Becca Schofield. She was the young teen from New Brunswick who wanted everyone to spread kindness. In fact, it was her dying wish. Thousands were inspired to do good deeds in a global movement, "#BeccaToldMeTo," Campaign. Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold was quoted as saying, "May we keep this incredible young woman's spirit alive, every day."

It is the end of 2018 and the beginning of another year. It is an opportunity for a fresh start. Islanders are well known for their generosity, especially at Christmas time. I would like to propose that in 2019, we keep Becca's wish alive by doing at least one kind thing every day. It can be for a friend, family member or a total stranger. It could be as simple as visiting or a phone call.

Think of all the things you could do: baking, sending a card, letter or e-mail; babysitting, holding a door open, offering a senior a drive, letting someone with a small order go first at cash, buying a coffee, making a meal, giving blood, helping spouse with chores, making a donation to a charity and helping a neighbour.

There are countless ways to help each other. It seems like a simple task and it is. We just need to think of others more. During the writing of this letter to the editor my husband warmed up a hot bowl of turkey soup and brought it to me at the computer. This is what I mean by a simple task that means so much.

I know it is a busy world and we have our day planners full of appointments and chores. I plan to take the time in 2019 to honour Becca's wish and to do one kind deed every day. I am hoping that you will join the movement. These can be secret kind deeds. They can be big or small.

A well-known verse in the Bible is John 13:34. " Love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” It is clear that we should help each other in whatever way we can. There are some that have the financial resources to make large contributions. It does not have to be a tangible gift. Little things like a smile don't cost anything. Even words of encouragement and support mean so much.

Lending a helping hand during a difficult time is generally the "Island way of life." There are countless fundraisers to help those that are ill and struggling. Just think about the impact that one kind deed from everyone would make. We are a small friendly Island and this goal is attainable.

Becca's legacy will live on if we each do our part to do one kind thing every day. Won't you consider making this your New Year's resolution?

Just think about the impact that one kind deed from every one each day would make.
