I am writing in regard to your Sept. 14 article “Emerald, P.E.I. man in coma after fall at construction site.”

The importance of work safety needs to be brought to light. Work safety is often taken lightly or disregarded and this shows in the statistics.

According to the Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety there are 951 work related fatalities in Canada per year as well as 251,508 people who had to take time off due to a work-related injury or illness.

The policies put in place are only followed to an extent. From personal experience I know that the small things such as keeping three limbs on a ladder or steel toed shoes are often overlooked.

These seemingly harmless oversights can lead to serious injury or death and this needs to be thoroughly discussed and enforced to assure the safety of everyone.

The importance of work safety must be brought forward to prevent further injuries and fatalities.
