I am writing in regards to the proposed asphalt and concrete plant that will be located across from the Charlottetown Airport. As a resident of the community, I have strong concerns that this will impact our city not only for today, but for our future generations. Primarily, this implementation of this plant will cause increased pollution, truck traffic and decreased property values. The less-than-clear notification to the public that was issued in the newspaper was the first indication that this was going to be a backroom deal. Council voted 5-4 at a special public meeting in favour. Voting in favour were councillors Greg Rivard, Alanna Jankov, Terry MacLeod, Mike Duffy and Terry Bernard. Voting against the amendment were councillors Jason Coady, Julie McCabe, Mitchell Tweel and Bob Doiron.
Coun. Kevin Ramsay did not attend.
My question is for the councillors who voted “Yes”. As an elected official, your job and responsibility is to represent the view of the people who voted for you. It has been loud and clear that citizens of Charlottetown have voiced their concerns and disappointment of this decision, therefore, how can you validate your decision to vote in favour for this controversial development?
I want to remind you that you were elected to identify and discuss issues impacting the City of Charlottetown, to receive and consider public input, make appropriate decisions in a manner which encourages full and open discussion, effectively represent the interests of your constituents and ward, while taking into consideration the needs and well-being of the residents. Without any explanation or justification of your vote, this validates that you are voting based on your own interests. Greg Rivard, Alanna Jankov, Terry MacLeod, Mike Duffy, Terry Bernard and Kevin Ramsay — until you are able to speak out about your decision you are all considered untrustworthy.
