It seems there are some "drama queens" living in Alberton, and they are definitely not gay. From my home in Vancouver, I read Stephen Irving's recent letter and was heartbroken and horrified to learn what he went through in your town. I too grew up in a small town and thought immediately of how many gay people we had in our community, until I realized it was more of a ‘don't ask, don't tell’ situation. Then I kept thinking about the friend who didn't fit in at high school and shot himself in the head. The friends who moved away from friends and family never to return. Of course, they were gay too. We can all be oblivious to the pain and suffering of others, and even more so to the simple gesture that hanging a flag, or choosing not to judge, can soothe. A pride flag doesn’t make you gay. It doesn’t encourage people to be gay. It simply tells others that you refuse to hate. I cannot imagine any council meeting anywhere in 2019 where that was too much to give.
