EDITOR:
Once again, I’m responding to letter from Flora J. Thompson in The Guardian (Jan. 10) regarding seniors in this building (and others, I’m sure) having to shovel their cars out themselves. I have sent at least two letters, if not three to this newspaper, indicating that there is a program – The Seniors Independence Initiative – that offers funding for snow shovelling and a host of other services. In January last year, I posted applications on the bulletin board of this building. Speaking of the bulletin board, there is someone posting on that board offering snow shovelling for $10. Can’t beat that!
As for this program, some seniors I’ve spoken to – explaining that it is based on your Notice of Assessment income – I’ve heard only negative replies, for example, “I’m not talking to government.” There is no reason to be afraid of anyone in government. We elected these politicians. Essentially, they work for us, as do their employees, if we look at where salaries come from (our tax dollars). Throughout our lives, before our senior years, we certainly paid our share of taxes. The phone number for the The Seniors Independence Initiative is 1-877-569-0546. I can’t stress enough the importance of this program and encourage all seniors in their own homes or housing to take full advantage of it. I do. We earned it, as far as I’m concerned.
