Reading the recent news about the expenses for Summerside mayor and councillors is somewhat concerning.
Two councillors had limited expenses of approximately $27 and $370, while others had between $2,000 to $5,000. It would appear as part of these high-end expenses are the councillors who attended the Federation of Municipalities conference. The most staggering number was expenses for Mayor Basil Stewart, who also attended the conference. These expenses of Mayor Stewart should be itemized and listed for all taxpayers to see.
I question where our mayor would chalk up over $15,000 in one year. This seems extremely high. Coun. Cory Snow at $5,000 is high as well.
In accordance with transparency and accountability, we should being reading an itemized list of these expenses. Telling us, the taxpayer about a number, just does not cut it.
The old saying should apply here: "If one is going to walk the walk, they had better talk and talk." Holding our elected officials accountable on issues of spending is the right thing to do. It’s our hard-earned money they are spending.
We will wait patiently to see an update from these mentioned elected officials
