It was a beautiful summer sunny day. My husband and I decided to play the “tourist.” We seize every opportunity to tour our beautiful Island. The big decision was where to go. My husband suggested the new Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish. It is part of L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish National Historic Site of Canada. It pays tribute to L.M. Montgomery as a person of national historic significance.
The exhibits were most interesting outlining the life of L.M. Montgomery. There was a wall of Anne of Green Gables book covers in 40 different languages. A Lego Anne of Green Gables house was also on display. The new building is spacious and airy and includes a gift shop. There are admission fees: $7.80 (adult), $6.55 (senior) and youth 6-17 free.
To our amazement, on the way to Cavendish we started meeting one Model T Ford car after another on the road. We pulled in to the Anne of Green Gables parking lot and lo and behold, there were more cars. We went over to have a look and got to talk to some of the owners. The cars were part of the Model T Ford Club International P.E.I. Red Dirt Tour.
We noted that the red Coca-Cola car was for sale. There was no price tag, but you can bet it would not be cheap. This is an interesting hobby for many people who enjoy travel. We met a couple from Chicago and a couple from Ontario. We were told that the cars were transported from province to province by trailer.
The lady from Ontario told us that under the hood of their car there was a very simple engine. She went on to say that cars today don’t really need all the fancy gadgets. Those cars were built to last. They are the pride and joy of owners who proudly drive them.
They were staying in Brudenell, and each day, they are given a specific route to explore. This way they all get to enjoy the beautiful Island landscapes. They are on the Island until July 19th. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to see a Model T on your travels.
Playing the “tourist” is so much fun and you never know what you might see. Why don’t you give it a try soon?
