My name is Pat Birtwistle. My family and I have been avid outdoors people on P.E.I. for many years.
As we all know, this spring has presented new challenges. Walkers, joggers and maple tree tappers have all had to adapt to maintain responsible social distancing, while still getting a breath of fresh air.
Most people I know have been taking the advice of government representatives and following the rules.
I want to take this opportunity to reassure the people in charge that, in my opinion, with a few changes to our usual practices, fishing on P.E.I. is an activity that can still be carried out safely.
My son (who lives at home) and I had planned to be heading to a pond this week. Rather than the normal carpooling, we intended to meet another fishing friend there and continue our social distancing practices. There would no sharing of boats or close contact. Just the usual long-range banter of who’s out-fishing whom. As normal, the rules should be followed and enforced.
This spring has been challenging. Job losses, quarantines, school shutdowns, restaurant closures and sport cancellations are all part of our current norm. Responsible fishing is an outdoor activity that could still be enjoyed with a few changes and help some get through this challenging time.
Stay safe.
