I am living in a fishing town and the fishermen are fishing lobsters for a living. They are working hard trying to make a good living so they can pay their bills and support their families. Like everybody else, they have stress and they worry if they will be able to sell and get a good price for their labour.
After reading the news about the province having a hard time finding labourers and immigrants having trouble to get into the province and work in the processing plants, I am stumped. We have unemployed students that could work these jobs but Ottawa — the way I read the news — will give them $2,000 a month, no question asked.
Let's be honest here, if you were a young person on summer break and not working, what would any young person do? Go to work for $13 an hour five or six days a week or get $2,000, no questions asked and relax at the beach?
My other complaint is, if you are collecting a half decent pension plus OAS and CPP, do you really need that $300 that will be given to you regardless if you need it or not?
There will be people needing it that are on a guaranteed supplement — good for them — but lots of us won't need it as they are well set. I just don't agree with that handout as far as I am concerned. And I will find a good use for that $300.
