EDITOR:
I applaud the editorial in The Guardian recently on why the paper will refer to what’s happening to the climate as a climate crisis instead of the usual climate change.
Thank you for reminding your readers of the opportunity, “to insist that people running for office make addressing the climate crisis a priority.” While we hold their feet to the fire, let’s not forget the incumbents! Do they, too, need their toes toasted? Here’s a concrete suggestion for Charlottetown city council and Mayor Philip Brown. Why not show leadership and join the Global Covenant of Mayors Canada? Become part of the worldwide coalition of 9,200 members, including 29 Canadian cities, committed to climate action.
Led by UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, the coalition is creating a vital network for sharing experiences and advancing climate goals. This is not an empty gesture and they are achieving credible results. That’s because mayors from Halifax to Melbourne know that countries make commitments, but cities and local governments play a big role in delivering the actual results because, let’s face it, that’s where most people live.
Our nation’s capital is a coalition member. Why should the nation’s birthplace be left behind?
