What you need to know about COVID-19: September 17, 2020

First of all we would like to make it known that we are not opposed to apartment buildings being built on the C2-zoned property behind Royalty Maples Cottages, but we are opposed to excess traffic being permitted through our subdivision via Trainor Street. There is not a legal driveway there and already it is extremely difficult to enter and exit our subdivision to and from Malpeque and Lower Malpeque Roads.
Already we have excess traffic taking shortcuts through our community to and from both roads — very often beyond the speed limit. We are grateful to have temporary speed bumps, but often they are not a deterrent to some drivers.
We do not have sidewalks and I have been told that some of the councillors were not aware of this when the vote was taken. It also would be reasonable to think that the chair of this meeting would have made this known and perhaps suggested a walk-through to assess the situation before a vote was taken, but apparently this didn't happen.
Actually, we were shocked and angered when we heard on the news that the town planner said that the community could handle the extra 120 cars. This would almost double the traffic from the existing subdivision and would put the many children in our neighbourhood in more danger throughout each day. Also, the students meet the school buses at the corner of Irwin Drive and
Trainor Street and the federal mailboxes on Irwin Drive are directly across the foot of Trainor Street.
All councillors need to review the traffic study, and it needs to be shared publicly. Having traffic lined up to go to work and trying to access Malpeque and Lower Malpeque roads would be frustrating and difficult for those trying to get to their jobs on time. We feel that our properties would be devalued and it would degrade our community as a whole. I would expect that we would have a considerable reduction in our property tax if that were to happen. As it stands, when we built our house, our tax was around $1,900, and as of today is over $5,000 yearly.
We built in this community to be in the city and not in the downtown core area. The homes in this community are single- and two-storey dwellings.
In closing, I wish to thank councillors Jason Coady, Bob Doiron and Mitch Tweel for voting against this proposal. It tells us that you have the safety and interests of our neighbourhood at heart.
We put our trust in all our councillors and when it comes to voting for the good and safety of any community, you are all responsible.
