It’s getting obvious – there’s a provincial election coming. And all the parties are at pains to demonstrate their energy credentials by adopting wind turbines. Sadly, I can think of no government in the world that has succeeded in significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The infatuation with wind turbines is almost universal, despite the facts that the end result has been a rise in power prices and increasing emissions from the fossils fuels needed to ensure steady supply. Unhappily, we are discovering wind is neither cheap nor green. Take the case of Germany. If they had spent the billions wasted on turbines on new nuclear power, they would have zero emissions and abundant reliable safe power at lower prices. France, with 80 per cent nuclear, has the cheapest prices and the lowest emissions in Europe. It is significant to hear on the radio this morning a prominent anti-nuke activist apply a little thinking and change his mind by supporting the expansion of the Point Lepreau reactor. And in a nuclear-free Australia, the current prime minister has expressed support for that country going nuclear. Perhaps some sense is filtering through the sustainable energy euphoria.
