EDITOR:
In a letter to editor on Thursday in The Guardian and Journal Pioneer ("View about fishers was misrepresented"), the NDP Egmont candidate Sharon Dunn claimed I misrepresented her. My question to her is this: How?
I, along with many other Islanders, heard you clearly state on the morning radio that “fishermen should be taught to swim.” That might not be a precise quote, but it is basically what she said. In her letter, she attempts to clarify that she was only concerned with their safety. By stating her great respect and interest in the fishery, she attempts to denigrated my view of Island fishers. I merely indicated if this was a part of her policy, it was inane at best.
I hardly think teaching fishers to swim would be a top priority for the NDP. For Dunn to attempt to give the impression that I was disrespecting them is utterly wrong. I solely took issue with her suggestion. In closing, I point out her letter makes no mention of her statement that fishermen should learn to swim. I wonder why?
