EDITOR:

My wife and I recently completed all 435 kilometers of the re-purposed abandoned rail-bed trails on the Island. We did this walking vacation on the “installment plan:” a total of 20 days, with 3 to 5 consecutive hiking days each year. We had a great time. We met an interesting mix of Islanders from different “walks” of life (groan!), enjoyed the scenery and hospitality and kept fit ... all at the same time.

We thank the all who gave their voice to this transubstantiation of infrastructure, from visionaries to politicians to planning and building and maintenance committees. More importantly, the dollars we willingly spent on food and lodging and incidentals across P.E.I. benefited local communities. Congratulations on spending tax money intelligently in a way that not only brings tourists to your province but benefits Islanders who want to stay fit. You are national leaders.

One more thing. Be national leaders too. Shake off political inertia and vote for proportional representation to get the wheels moving towards real democracy, instead of the quasi “democracy-lite” under which we currently exist.

Roger and Joan Boutilier,

Wolfville, N. S.
