The optics in an article in last Saturday’s Guardian about the upcoming referendum on electoral reform (“Choosing Sides”, Feb. 9) caught my eye. The lengthy article featured a prominent photo of businessman John Barrett representing the “No” side of the argument for mixed member proportional representation (MMP). A much smaller photo of social activist and union man Leo Cheverie for the “Yes” side appeared further down in the piece. The visual contrast between a well-dressed John Barrett with a neatly trimmed beard (representing the establishment?) versus the bushy bearded Leo Cheverie (representing those for change) is quite striking. Was there a subliminal message from the Guardian editors here?
