I have spent considerable time trying to understand the mixed member proportional voting system, especially the part related to the nine province-wide seats. I thought I had it figured out until I read that these nine seats would be allotted to the parties according to the D'Hondt method. Apparently this method was developed by a chap over in Brussels in 1882 and is a mathematical process designed to award seats in as proportional a manner as possible. I had some time on my hands on the weekend so I decided to study up on this method. After a half hour of research, I think I know how it works, maybe. My conclusion from all of this is that the overwhelming advantage of the first-past-the-post system is that it is not difficult to understand. I will be voting NO on the referendum question.
