EDITOR:

In regard to an open Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system proposed for P.E.I., it is suggested that because province-wide candidates are voted on by the electorate, that the voters have been satisfactorily engaged in the process.

RELATED: OPINION: Governing by consensus

From my perspective, the back rooms of political parties are still deciding which potential MLA’s on are on the list presented to the public. So, the parties are narrowing the candidate options of the electorate.

It is a form of guidance and control to be selected as an Island-wide candidate, that the party desires. Control is control, whether open or closed MMP. In either case, the party gets its way.

Bush Dumville,

MLA, West Royalty-Springvale
