Upon reading the article (Pope Road roundabout plan not popular with one Summerside resident, Sept. 11), I have wondered if the members of the present city council were involved in the makeup of the latest proposal our city council has put forward as a remedy to fix this problem, which continues to go nowhere.
Having served on the first city council, I must say that the situation has been a major inconvenience for residents, visitors, and business since we became a city.
As I recall, efforts were put forward by the newly elected council to have the CAO at the time move forward with an acceptable plan that would see the Pope Road become aligned with Ryan Street. To date, this inconvenient and dangerous situation has yet to be corrected, and the three homeowners affected by the situation see it as an accident ready to happen.
Why have our elected folks not taken positive action by moving the Gerrard house back an appropriate distance on his property? There would not even need to be a change of address. The remaining houses could be purchased and relocated to the north side of the existing road, turning them to face the new straightened street, placing all houses on concrete foundations.
In addition to the above, I would recommend the use of stop signs at the new intersection. Should that not be found adequate, traffic lights could then be installed.
In closing, I would suggest that if council could treat homeowners with respect and fairness, they might experience more favourable results. My deceased grandfather had a saying that you can attract more flies with honey rather than using bullying tactics.
