EDITOR:
Here on Prince Edward Island there is an annual mid-March tradition known as Band Days, an uncompetitive music festival featuring school bands from the entire island. Having witnessed this event for 27 years, I continue to be impressed with this showcase of student musical achievement.
Moreover, I marvel at the strength of Island band teachers, warriors really, who, despite tremendous obstacles -- inclusive of school closures and delays which disrupt rehearsals -- unfailingly place the product of their teaching on public display, knowing that in doing so the quality of their work will be evaluated not only by the adjudicators, but by their colleagues, band parents, school administrators and the like.
This year's event was noteworthy for the high standard of well-crafted repertoire selected by the band directors, and the overall musicality and artistry of the performances. So, it is with tremendous pride that I give a huge shout out to my P.E.I. band director colleagues for all they do to enrich the lives of PEI students and make it all happen. Music matters, and our music teachers make such a difference!
