EDITOR:
I am a patient in need of seeing a neurologist. I have been advised that there is an 8 to 10 month wait just for a consultation in New Brunswick. I would then have to wait another 6 to 8 months for treatment. While my doctors here are treating my condition with cortisone shots and many pills, I really need to see a neurologist.
RELATED: Opposition questions long waits to see neurologists in P.E.I.
I have a synovial cyst on my spine, which is not uncommon, and often does not have to be treated, however mine is situated low on my spine and is pressing on nerves resulting in continual excruciating pain in my back and leg. My life as I knew it, which was healthy and active, has come to a halt, I walk with the use of a cane and I can neither stand or walk for even short periods of time.
How can the minister of health say there is a full complement of neurologists, when two are on leave, and where is the third one? Having a locum for a few days a month is not going to cover for two full time physicians.
This situation is not acceptable and I implore the powers that be to hire the necessary physicians to serve P.E.I. residents. I hope the minister and MLAs never have to require treatment by a neurologist and suffer the pain and sorrow of a life changed.
