EDITOR:
Over the last couple of years, strong new markets have emerged for Island lobster – and this trade diversification is resulting in new opportunities for the sector.
In particular, the trend toward market diversification is being driven by successful new trade agreements with both Europe and Asia – which have driven new lobster exports around the world. As a result of that increased global demand, our Island’s fishery sector is reaping the benefits. And I am very proud to be part of a federal government that finalized both those trade agreements.
Additionally, it appears that world markets will continue to grow. Across the globe, consumers are demanding high-quality products – and more and more, they want those products to be environmentally sustainable.
Now, we all know that our lobster is harvested from an extremely clean environment in a way that protects the long-term viability of the resource.
And as consumers in Asia and Europe grow to rely on our reliable supply and high-quality, I believe our opportunity is to tell the story of our lobster in terms of environmental sustainability. Potentially, this may include exploration of innovative new approaches to energy, product storage and processing techniques.
The fact of the matter is this: We have a great resource, for which people around the world are willing to pay good prices. Our goal now should be to make sure we are leveraging the highest possible value from a unique and in-demand product like Prince Edward Island lobster. And with new trade agreements finalized by the federal government, we are in a great position to take advantage of growing public demand for our world-class products.
