EDITOR:

In a leadership race that had talk of restricting women’s rights and spoke about the lifestyles of LGBT Islanders as a “cultural fad,” it was a sigh of relief to see a level-headed winner. Islanders from all parties should take a moment to collectively congratulate Dennis King and members of the PC Party. I genuinely mean that. Island politics will always have its problems, and each party their flaws. But on Saturday night, the PC Party sent a message. A red line has been drawn about the respect we show Islanders who aren’t white, straight, God-fearing men. I often hear Islanders say, “we’re backwards here.” No, we are not. When the most powerful countries around the world and other provinces are back-tracking on human rights, the P.E.I. legislature isn’t backing down. As King’s PCs made clear, all of our political parties have integrity when it comes to respecting the dignity of every last Islander. Progress on P.E.I. might advance at a crawl. It might hold the status quo for a while. But, thankfully, it won’t retreat. In the current political climate off this Island, that says a lot. For that, PC Party members, thank you. And congratulations again, Mr. King.
