EDITOR:

After the wind storm that left many of us without power on Nov. 29, advice on power and communication back-up plans would be greatly appreciated.

Some suggestions that come to mind:

A comprehensive introduction to household generators offered by either the public or private sectors. Information such as basic power requirements to run a sump pump or small heater along with safety and maintenance tips would be a good start for most homeowners.

A reminder that old-fashioned landlines as opposed to cordless phones can be most useful. A cordless phone which plugs into a jack and power outlet is useless in an outage. If people keep a landline available (if only tucked away in a closet when not in use), they can remove the cordless phone and plug the corded landline into the jack. If the service provider has power, then your landline should work. Not all of us will have sufficiently charged cellphone batteries when the unexpected occurs.

Lastly, hand warmer packets sold in many stores can be a comfort while you are getting the generator hauled out.

Giselle Déziel,

Cornwall
