The Indian Head lighthouse is viewable from just about anywhere along the Summerside waterfront. Historic data tells us that the keeper would row out to tend the light at night and row back in the morning, but from our vantage point in the harbour, it seems one could walk right along the breakwater at low tide to reach the house. I’ve heard it’s a popular place to visit when the weather and tides co-operate.
Suffering through mental health disorders is like being that lighthouse. A friendly sight to behold in sunny times and at low tide. At night, in the dark, when it’s stormy, nobody visits the lighthouse. The light serves only to keep people away.
The Indian Head lighthouse is owned by the Government of Canada. The Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for the property.
It makes me sad to see that lighthouse, alone and untended. I don’t think I ever got to see that light shine.
