EDITOR:
At this time of year, we stop and think of our military men and women who proudly served in the two great wars. We all know that those killed as well as those who survived are largely responsible for the freedoms we have today.
But let us not forget the thousands of military men and women who never did participate in a war but who also proudly played and are playing a role in these freedoms. In my own family, for example, there were six children of Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Doyle, who chose the military as a career and served their country for a combined total of 145 years: David, 40 years, Philip, 38 years, Pius, 31 years, Bob, 29 years, Basil, 5 years and Gertrude, 2 years.
These many years of service are an extraordinary achievement by one family, perhaps unprecedented in this country, and I, as a brother, want to thank them all for their contributions to the freedoms I have today. They are all alive today except one, and who knows, perhaps someday…hopefully sooner than later… they will receive a higher recognition than the one I am giving them in this letter for the roles they played in the Canadian Armed Forces and our freedom.
