EDITOR:

I was deeply saddened, as well as were my friends, to read Ralph MacDonald’s recent Letter to the Editor concerning his sexual abuse as a young boy.

Ralph’s situation is only the tip of an iceberg. Ralph took a courageous stand to identify this systemic problem which has plagued society world-wide. He has recently sought out a very supportive counsellor whom he holds in high regard. As well, he has found a self-help group here on the Island who provide him a life line and supportive care. In a short time, Ralph has come to feel a great sense of relief, and he urges people who have suffered sexual abuse not to wait years to get help that is readily available here on Prince Edward Island.

In my career as an addiction mentor and counsellor, I have met many clients with stories similar to that relayed by Ralph, involving many organizations across Canada. While in the military, I witnessed first-hand and counselled many victims of sexual abuse. Equally, I know many who have not tried to seek help as Ralph MacDonald has done.

All the best to you, Ralph, on your road to recovery.

George Dalton,

Summerside
