EDITOR:

The most alarming article in the Jan. 6 Guardian was the special report on page A4: “Oil and gas bonanza on Newfoundland's horizon.” Our world is nearing a tipping point, and any additional oil and gas extracted and used as a fossil fuel only hastens the moment we reach that point. It is immaterial whether the worldwide demand for oil increases. If there is less oil to meet that demand, it only increases the pressure on oil users to find alternative and more sustainable sources of energy.

Any “frenzy” of investment and employment should be directed towards establishing sustainable wind farms off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Wind farms, or other sources of sustainable energy, will provide employment for Canadians and profits for the companies developing them.

The Guardian should not be promoting fossil fuel development as a beneficial bonanza but warning against such development as dangerous.

Meadowbank
