I recently read an article posted on Feb. 7 on CBC news concerning non-alcohol beer. Currently, P.E.I. and Nunavut are the only two provinces remaining that do not allow 0.5 per cent non (low)-alcohol beer in grocery stores. The current legislation does not allow 0.5 per cent non-alcohol beer to be sold, but we now have craft beer being sold inside one of the big chains. As much as I welcome the addition of craft beer being sold inside a grocery store, the whole picture doesn't make sense. Our government is currently developing legislation that will allow the free flow of all alcohol from other provinces in to P.E.I. It makes sense to do the same for non-alcohol beer.
If and when the old archaic law gets changed, I would like to see the grocery stores sell the product at a fair price, consistent with the other provinces and Amazon. I would also challenge the craft breweries in P.E.I. and the Maritimes to develop some non-alcohol beers, and our wineries to develop non-alcohol wine. A growing number of people who don't want to drink and drive are demanding this safe option. It's time to make a change.
