JEERS: To people who continue to pass school buses that are stopped to pick up or drop off children. On Thursday, someone passed a bus in the Kinkora area as it was dropping off children after school. Two of the children had already crossed the road, another had started across and a fourth was getting off the bus when a vehicle drove by, despite the flashing lights. It was a near miss that could have had disastrous consequences. The same day, another driver passed a stopped bus in Tignish. If a suspended licence and a fine of up to $5,000 aren’t enough to make people think twice about passing school buses, the thought of possibly killing a child certainly should.
JEERS: To the City of Charlottetown for not treating sidewalks with salt/sand soon enough in the downtown core on Friday morning. After a night of freezing rain, it was a dangerous trek to work for pedestrians as well as people walking from their vehicles to work. The city needs to do a better job making the sidewalks safe and get an earlier start the next time bad weather hits the city.
CHEERS: To Emma Rudy, who is slated to play Anne Shirley at this summer’s Charlottetown Festival’s Anne of Green Gables – The Musical. Originally from Stratford, Ont., Rudy will be the 19th actor to play Anne since the show opened in 1965 in Charlottetown.
CHEERS: To Marilyn Sheen, a Grade 12 student at Kensington Intermediate Senior High, who was named a recipient of the $100,000 Loran Scholars Award. After graduation, Sheen is looking to study sustainability at either Dalhousie University or McGill University. Sheen was one of 88 finalists to receive one of the 34 awards available. Westisle Composite High School student Olivia Batten, 18, was also a finalist for the award.
CHEERS: To P.E.I. Bantam A Female Hockey League players Charlotte Murray and Alexa McAllister, both 14, who have been selected to represent the Island in the Feb. 16 International Ice Hockey Federation Global Girls game in Calgary. The game is being hosted by Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta and will be played at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the home of the Calgary Flames.
