CHEERS & JEERS: Margaret Ross spoke eloquently in the face of adversity

Margaret Ross of Charlottetown was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer shortly after moving to B.C. this spring to live closer to her son and his family. With likely only months to live, Ross’s dying wish was to have her other three sons and a grandson flown out for one final goodbye. A Go Fund Me campaign, an anonymous donor and the national Give A Mile organization have made it happen.

Cheers: To Holland College for bringing back a version of its photography and golf course management programs. The two-year programs were cancelled last year, but both will be offered again in September as one-year golf operations and photography and videography programs.

Cheers: To the Three Rivers Sportsplex for stepping up to the plate and offering support to the Montague-Mount Hamilton Goodwill Games. The Sportsplex has offered to donate three hours of ice time and a rate of $135 an hour for additional time for this year’s tournament. Three Rivers council previously voted against a request to donate five hours of ice time to the games. Kudos to the Sportsplex for recognizing the importance of the tournament, which has helped form life-long friendships through its 51-year history.

Jeers: To the City of Charlottetown for allowing a section of Queen Street to be in poor condition. Mainly between Nassau and Connolly streets, motorists risk damaging their vehicles on several blocks of potholes or sunken manhole covers, or risk causing an accident by swerving to avoid them. This section of Queen Street has been in disrepair for a while, so hopefully the city makes fixing this section a priority for the upcoming construction season.

Cheers: To Margaret Ross, a former Islander, living in Nanaimo, B.C. The Guardian has featured Ross in a number of stories since last summer as she bravely fought a serious form of cancer. After doctors gave her only months to live, she declared as her dying wish to be reunited with all her sons one last time in her B.C. home. Some of her sons lived on the east coast. She got her wish in late August. Ross died peacefully in B.C. on Wednesday. She had spoken with The Guardian eloquently a number of times over the last few months, touching base for the final time just before Christmas. Rest in peace, Margaret.

Cheers: To Side Hustle, the female improv group, for supporting Loretta Coady MacAulay’s birthday fundraiser for Hospice P.E.I. The group donated a portion of proceeds from its show at The Guild this past Friday. The group consists of Sarah Brown, Patti Larsen, Kirstin Lund, Doris MacPhee, Nancy McLure, Caron Prins and Monica Rafuse. Also cheers to the many organizations and individuals who donated items for the silent auction. Funds raised will go to Hospice P.E.I., a charity, which provides care and support to persons living with or dying with a life-threatening illness and those who are bereaved.
