Ruth Brewer

BREWER, Ruth Brewer, née Ruth Louise Stevens, of Cavendish, died peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown, on Tuesday December 24, 2019, aged 96. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Stevens and the late Gladys Macleod Pearmain. Ruth was the loving mother of Dede Wilson and the late Bob Briehl and Susan Alexandra Brewer; grandmother of Enrique Lloyd Briehl Tamayo and Roberto Federico Briehl Tamayo, and Rowan and Anya Wilson. She was great grandmother to Senan and Sadie Conway, Maurice and Freddie Gordon Hayes, and Maria Genoveva Katharina Briehl Schell and Rafael Frederick Briehl Schell. For many years, Ruth was a councillor at Cavendish Resort Municipality. She was privileged to live in the North Rustico lighthouse in the 1960s & 70s, enabling her to research and write a history of the harbour with Arthur Rollings. She was well-known for her work with children, and was a specialist in early childhood education, particularly with pre-school children and those with special needs. She will be remembered for her child care centre, Skye House in New Glasgow, which she ran for more than ten years until 1989. She then ran the Country House Inn on the Cavendish–North Rustico National Park until she was 87. She was a champion and campaigner for the establishment of nurse practitioners and rural health clinics on the Island and with Mona Doiron was responsible for the establishment of the North Rustico Clinic. Ruth and her family would like to thank the many wonderful Island friends for being there over the years when she needed them. Special thanks to Ann and Garth Mac Lean, Brenda Mac Donald and Lloyd and Maureen Gauthier for their friendship. There will be no visitation or funeral by personal request. If so desired, memorial donations to the North Rustico Lions Club’s fundraising for the QEH Equipment Foundation for ‘vein finders‘ for the hospital would be appreciated. Online condolences may be sent to www.peifuneralcoops.com or by sending an email to [email protected]. Arrangements have been entrusted to Central Queens Funeral Home, New Glasgow. A memorial will be announced in the summer.
