John "Alvin" Macvittie

MACVITTIE, John "Alvin" We are saddened to announce the death of John "Alvin" MacVittie, August 21, 2019 - 2 days shy of his 86th birthday. Born on August 23, 1933 in Forest Hill, PEI to Aubrey Max MacVittie and Ida MacKinnon, Alvin was delivered by Dr. Roddie MacDonald at his grandparents' house, where he spent many happy days. In 1951, at the age of 18, Alvin joined the Royal Canadian Navy and the next 23 years were spent travelling the world on various ships, forging friendships, and enjoying adventures that were the topic of many of his stories. If there was ever someone who lived life his own way - that was John Alvin. Known for his wild ways, strong presence and outgoing nature, even in his later years when he 'settled down' he was a memorable man to all who met him. A natural story teller with a great sense of humour, one-liners and a poetic heart - he was equally spontaneous and a creature of habit - you just never knew what he'd be up to next. His favorite spot was in the garage tinkering and painting cars or sitting reading one of his history or poetry books. He drove big ol boats, and was a sharp dresser - a hat or bandana on his head and his shoes were the shiniest in Westmoreland. Alvin met challenges with an unspoken resolve and wit. Three years ago he was given 6 months to live - as he said with a grin, "I fooled them". He truly lived life one day at a time. Alvin was predeceased by his beloved son, Scott Douglas MacVittie, half sister, Evelyn Nicholson and leaves behind his daughter, Susan (Jason Squires) and granddaughter, Skyla, as well as his grandson, John McBride (Shelly McBride/Scherer), brother Roy, and half sister, Kay Noble. A Celebration of Life will be held September 22 at 2pm in the Crapaud Hall and all are welcome to attend and share a story. Doors open at 1:30. In honor of his love for dogs - donations can be made to the PEI Humane Society. Thank you for your kind words, visits and friendship - it meant a lot to Alvin. "He was quite the character, 'byes"
