A young man was sentenced to eight months in jail for several crimes including a failed attempt to escape custody.
Bryce Edwin Thompson, 19, was given credit of three months for time served. He will be on probation for 18 months following his release from the Provincial Correctional Centre.
Thompson was sentenced Wednesday in provincial court in Charlottetown after pleading guilty to a number of crimes, including stealing gas from a service station in Stratford and Cornwall, stealing cash from a restaurant’s register, possession of a stolen van and stolen licence plate, and trying to escape lawful custody.
The Crown noted when Thompson is not in custody, he is using drugs and committing offences.
“Clearly his addiction issues are not controlled,’’ said Thompson’s lawyer Thane MacEachern.
“He’s not happy with his life.’’
Judge John Douglas told Thompson his outlook is not all grim, noting he is still young and has a supportive family.
He urged the man to make reasonable efforts to continue his education or pursue employment after he has served his time.
