CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Heritage Day is being celebrated at City Hall in Charlottetown Tuesday at noon.
The annual event will include an awards ceremony to honour individuals or organizations in the community who have worked to preserve and celebrate the city’s heritage.
This year’s theme is the history of post-secondary education in Charlottetown, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formation of the University of Prince Edward Island.
Edward MacDonald, UPEI history professor and author, will provide a brief lecture on the theme.
The city’s heritage staff has also created a historic exhibit entitled “On Saints and Welshmen: The Evolution of Post-Secondary Education” in Charlottetown, which will chronicle the history of the two institutions that came together in 1969 to form UPEI – Prince of Wales College and Saint Dunstan’s University.
The exhibit will run until March 22 in the storefront windows of the planning and heritage department at 233 Queen St.
An electronic version of the exhibit will be also shown at city hall during the Heritage Awards.
The Heritage Day celebrations are open to the general public and light refreshments will be served.
