CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Three Islanders have been selected as 2018 appointments to Queen’s counsel.
Janice L. MacCallum, Donald K. MacKenzie and Ronald J. Keefe are the recipients of this top recognition in the field of law.
Justice Minister and Attorney General Jordan Brown congratulated the appointees.
“This designation is given to lawyers who have demonstrated excellence in the practice of law and recognizes their contributions to the justice system as well as their community.”
Presented annually, the Queen’s counsel designation goes back to the 16th century England, when one or two senior barristers of the High Court were entrusted with providing the Crown with legal counsel.
This year’s recipients will be formally recognized during a ceremony at Government House by the Lt.-Gov. Antoinette Perry.
Background
Janice L. MacCallum graduated from Dalhousie Law School and was called to the bar in 1990. She left private practice in Charlottetown in 2004 to join the legal services section of the Department of Justice and Public Safety and the Office of the Attorney General. MacCallum is active within the profession, including the Council of Law Society of P.E.I.. She is also a competitive curler at the provincial and national level.
Donald K. MacKenzie obtained his law degree from Dalhousie Law School and was called to the bar in 1992. He practised law in Charlottetown with Foster Hennessey MacKenzie for 15 years, working with the Mi’kmaq community. He joined the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of P.E.I. as its legal/band government advisor in 2006 and was appointed executive director in 2014. MacKenzie is a former president of the Law Society of P.E.I.
Ronald J. Keefe graduated from Dalhousie Law School and was called to the bar in 1986. He is a member of the BIOTECanada board of directors, the UPEI board of governors, and was recently elected as a Fellow of Chartered Professional Accountants. He is president of the Regis Duffy BioScience Fund Inc., past-president of the United Way of P.E.I. and a former director of the Bank of Canada. Keefe practises with Stewart McKelvey in corporate and commercial law, with an emphasis on innovation and attraction of capital.
