CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - A Charlottetown woman who stabbed a man and hit him with a beer bottle that ricocheted off a fridge was sentenced Wednesday to nine months in jail.
Katelyn Ann Jennings, 27, appeared before Chief Justice Tracey Clements in P.E.I. Supreme Court in Charlottetown for sentencing after she was found guilty in November on two counts of assault with a weapon.
Reviewing the case, Clements said Jennings and the victim had been drinking on the night of the assaults and got into an altercation in a home in Caledonia.
At one point, Jennings threw a butcher block full of knives, which hit an oven door and broke the glass.
Clements said Jennings threw a beer bottle that ricocheted off a fridge and hit the victim in the head.
Jennings also stabbed the victim in the arm with a steak knife.
The victim needed four stitches for the cut on his arm.
Clements said a pre-sentence report referred to Jennings’ struggles with anxiety and depression.
Jennings also had a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.
During the sentencing submissions, the Crown suggested one year in jail while the defence sought a sentence of four months.
In sentencing Jennings, Clements said her related record was a factor to consider and the accused had a prior offence against the victim.
Jennings will be on probation for two years after her release with conditions that include assessments and counselling or treatment that her probation officer directs her to undergo for mental health, substance abuse, alcohol or anger management issues.
She must also perform 80 hours of community service.
Jennings will be subject to a weapons prohibition and must provide a DNA sample for the national databank.
Before leaving the courtroom, Clements said she hopes Jennings will embrace the supports available to her.
Clements also told Jennings she hopes it will be her last interaction with the justice system.
