Danny Grant has volunteered with the Souris Fire Department for the last 14 years, and for most of those years, he is the one who hands out the award.

However, this year he was on the receiving end as he was recently named the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award.

“I made some great friends. Every time you help someone is good, that is really why you are doing it,” he said.

The chief, who is currently Souris-Elmira MLA Colin LaVie, picks out the winner of the award, which is presented annually. Grant said and he believes everyone is entitled to the award.

“Everyone volunteers, I think everyone is pretty equal.”

Grant thinks highly of his colleagues who volunteer with the Souris Fire Department.

“Whether it is me or someone else getting it, it’s really hard to pick out one guy as a standout for the year. No one person can do anything alone. If somebody is not there, you pick up the slack. Guys that can show up, show up.”

“Whether it is me or someone else getting it, it’s really hard to pick out one guy as a standout for the year. No one person can do anything alone. If somebody is not there, you pick up the slack. Guys that can show up, show up.”

A lot of fire departments are struggling due to the lack of volunteers, but Grant said someone must do the job.

“Someone has got to step up to the plate. Somebody did it before me, I think there are lots of people who would like to do it.”

However, some people don’t do it because they don’t have the time, and that is fine, Grant said.

“For me, I have more time now than I did years ago. I think it is a great thing to do and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like to help somebody.”

Grant is far from retiring from volunteering.

“I’ll be there forever,” he said.
