A smoking fisherman has been kidnapped from Peggys Cove.
Shorty, a five-foot-two, 120-pound wooden carving, was stolen from the front yard of Peggys Cove Boat Tours between Sunday and Tuesday.
“People gave him hugs every day, put their arm around him and took pictures with him and now he’s gone,” Peter Richardson said Friday morning.
Shorty has been smoking his pipe and showing off a fish in front of Richardson’s business since last August.
“The lady that carved him was at a show and on her way home she decided to drive through Peggys Cove with quite a few carvings in the back of her pickup truck,” Richardson recalled.

“We pulled her over and bought Shorty,” he said.
Richardson stored Shorty away in the basement to keep him warm for the winter and brought him back out in February for the South Shore Lobster Crawl.
“When we brought him out I had noticed he had dried out and cracked in the basement, so I decided to leave him out for the rest of the winter to see if he would swell back up,” said Richardson.
“Now he’s gone.”
Richardson is offering a reward for Shorty’s safe return.
“He’s like family. He’s like family to a lot of people,” he said.
