Students had a slippery adventure Friday morning when their school bus was sidelined on an icy road in Springton.
Between 20 and 22 children were taken to a safe location, stranded for 20 to 25 minutes, as help also skidded into trouble.
Catherine MacKinnon, coordinator of the Public Schools Branch transportation, said the bus slid across Johnston Road at about 7:50 a.m.
A tow truck and a second school bus were sent out but both vehicles also became stuck in the icy conditions. A sand truck along with the tow truck eventually got the two school buses back on the road.
Queen District RCMP were called to help with traffic control.
MacKinnon says the children managed well during their delayed trip to Bluefield high school, East Wiltshire Intermediate, and Westwood Primary.
“Thankfully there were no injuries,’’ she says.
“They (students) were fine. They took their instructions and moved to safety.’’
MacKinnon says icy conditions can pop up, particularly on secondary roads. Extremely icy conditions were reported along a stretch of road in the Cornwall area, but no incidents occurred with any school buses.
“It’s the unknown,’’ MacKinnon says of potentially dangerous road conditions that bus drivers may encounter on mornings like Thursday.
