SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – A Summerside city council nominee has decided to leave the race.

On Sunday, Nancy Quinn - who was seeking the nomination for Ward 7: Green’s Shore-Three Oaks - announced that she would not continue in the race for the council seat.

The decision comes almost five days after the campaigns for the Nov. 5 municipal elections officially began.

“After the writ dropped, it made me face reality. That this was happening at the same time I was trying to establish my new store. Not running for council is a hard dream I’ve had to give up on,” said Quinn.

Earlier this summer, Quinn purchased the former Avonlea Books, a used bookstore in Summerside. She has since renamed it Seaside Books.

“The store is all I can think about. They say you have to give a new business 150 per cent. Until (the store) is up and running, I don’t think I can be a good councillor and my community deserves better.”

Quinn said she is sad to leave the race.

“I’m sorry that it’s come to this end for the people who have supported me. But all of the donations I have received in support of my campaign will be donated to PCH foundation.”

It may be the end of the road for the upcoming election, but Quinn says she would consider running again in the future.

“It’s something I’ve always been passionate about. And when I announced I said I wanted to inspire other women to do the same. Some have told me I did just that. So, I’m proud and grateful for this time.”

Brian McFeely is now running unopposed in Ward 7.

Municipal elections will be held across the province Nov. 5.
