FOXLEY RIVER, P.E.I. - Careful stewardship and funding is helping out Foxley River in Prince County.
For the past eight years, the Lot 11 and Area Watershed Management Group’s rehabilitation and enhancement efforts on the Foxley River East system have been a big success because of funding through the Wildlife Conservation Fund.
The group’s special project for this year, funded in part by the conservation fund, was the re-excavation of one of two sediment traps in the river system. A sediment trap is created to capture silt and runoff that can occur during heavy rains or flooding, keeping the silt from clogging a stream or river.
This particular trap on the Foxley River has been excavated every two years since 2010. This year, excavation spoils were greatly reduced from previous years, demonstrating the value of such instream traps.
“The stream system as a whole is becoming more stable and diverse because of the work we have been able to do thanks to the continued funding from the Wildlife Conservation Fund,’’ said Karen Rank, watershed group co-ordinator.
The fund provides money for the protection and enhancement of wildlife and wildlife habitat on P.E.I. The fund is made possible by the purchase of conservation licence plates and through fees paid by anglers, hunters and trappers.
