I am a Newsboys fan. So, when I heard about the four members of Newsboys (Michael Tait, Duncan Phillipps, Jody Davis and Jeff Frankenstein) inviting alumni Peter Furler and Phil Joel back to tour I was excited – until they didn’t come close enough to Prince Edward Island.

But all was not lost as they created an album. “Newsboys United” is a project consisting of 10 songs from a group that has added strength with the presence of Furler and Joel. And nothing about the Newsboys’ sound has been compromised.

Produced by Peter Furler and Geoff Duncan, along with executive producer Wes Campbell and assistant executive producer Dave Wagner, “Newsboys United” was released from Fair Trade

Services, a division of Provident Distribution. And, of course, a “Newsboys United” album wouldn’t be complete without guest vocals by Kevin Max, Michael Tait’s former DC Talk bandmate.

“Love One Another” is a high energy reminder to act as the title says.

“Newsboys United” opens with the debut single, “Greatness of Our God.” It is a beautiful reminder of God’s greatness as seen in creation and in the person of Christ. “There is only one King who could save the day….let the whole world sing/ the greatness of our God.”

“Symphony” is a beautiful comparison of our lives to a symphony that must be played. “Let my life be a symphony...every breath that I breathe/ Lord, I wanna bring You glory.”

“Never Setting Sun” is a Newsboys’-styled worship song. It is full of energy, reminding listeners of God’s mighty power, everlasting love and hope of heaven.

“Beautiful Story” is a lovely song of testimony.  “I would have lost hope had I not believed/ You know all the plans You have for me….You write a beautiful story.”

“Fearless is a reminder that we don’t need to be fearful when God is with us:  “I am fearless in Your presence/ You’re all around me/ In my weakness, You are strongest/ You surround me.”

All in all, I can safely say “Newsboys United” will not disappoint. Fans will be thrilled at the addition of Peter Furler and Phil Joel, and new listeners will appreciate both the musicianship and the heart of this group.

I’m not sure if these worship songs will make it to many Sunday morning songlists, but they will absolutely be listed as favourites in your home or vehicle playlist.
