SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A 23-year-old Summerside man has been remanded into custody after being charged with stealing large screen televisions from Summerside stores on seven different occasions.

According to police, the first incident occurred Dec. 12 when staff at the Superstore observed the suspect, Gerry Shields, leaving the store with a TV without paying.

Shields fled in a waiting vehicle, and the driver, a 23-year-old West Prince woman, is also facing charges in relation to this incident.

On Dec. 28, staff at Walmart reported a man left the store with a large TV he had not paid for.

Shields was located, with the television, in the Central Street area.

He was taken into custody and later released with a future court date.

On Jan. 2, staff at Canadian Tire reported a man had stolen a large screen TV and fled in a vehicle.

Shields was identified as the person responsible via video surveillance from the store.

On Jan. 3, Canadian Tire staff reported the same man had returned to the store and tried to steal another TV but fled the store.

Shields was again located by police in the Central Street area and was arrested after a foot pursuit.

Between the times of Shields’ arrest on Dec. 28 and Jan. 3, police received four other complaints of him having stolen large screen TV’s.

Shields was brought before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody until Jan. 7.
