SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The pool at Credit Union Place is getting a makeover, but it's costing the city twice as much as expected.
Summerside city council approved the decision to retile the recreation centre's pool during a monthly meeting on May 19, held via video conference. The pool hasn't been retiled since it was built, so $200,000 was set aside for the job in the city's capital budget.
"At that point, it was a best-guess estimate," said Coun. Cory Snow.
Council only received one tender from Tile Master Inc. at a cost of $400,131. To compensate, a low voltage lighting project for the centre will be deferred until 2021 and the money re-allocated to the retiling project.
The process is to begin this summer and is expected to take about 86 days to complete.
The pool will operate on a limited operations model throughout construction, which was likely going to be the case already considering COVID-19 restrictions, CAO Rob Philpott said, "knowing full well that we were going to be seeing revenue impacts anyway".
