It’s up to fishermen to verify that the mesh in the fishing nets they buy has the proper-size mesh.
Fisheries officer Anthony Cheverie, speaking at the annual meeting of the Prince County Fishermen’s Association, said officers encountered five herring fishery violations last year for fishing with undersized mesh.
“You have to verify the size yourself,” he said, instructing fishermen they cannot simply rely on the as-advertised size.
